The Murdered
Robert E. Wunderle
Rockaway Township, New Jersey
45 year old Robert Wunderle was found dead on the morning of Thursday, November 16, 1989 at 9:10 a.m. in a drainage ditch near Fireman’s Field on Beach Street in Rockaway, New Jersey. He was discovered by a Rockaway Sewer Authority worker.
Robert was wearing a business suit and an overcoat. His cause of death was determined to be from 2 gunshot wounds, one above the left ear and the other through the heart. Execution style, according to authorities. His case was ruled a homicide.
Robert was the Chief Economist and Vice President of public affairs for Supermarkets General Corporation, which operated the Pathmark supermarket chain. He was last seen alive the day before his death, leaving work at 8:45 p.m. by a coworker at their Woodbridge, New Jersey office. Two minutes later, at 8:47, Robert made a phone call to his son on his mobile phone.
His wife, Sue, claims she last saw her husband at home in Westfield, on his way out the door on the morning of Nov 15. He left a note saying he would be staying at the LaGuardia Marriott Hotel in Queens, New York for a two-day work meeting. Interestingly, investigators learned that Robert never had any scheduled meetings at the hotel and had not even reserved a room there.
Robert’s 1989 Mercury Grand Marquis was later recovered in Manhattan, New York. It was located inside of a “park-and-lock” garage near the entrance to the Lincoln Tunnel. The garage records showed that the car was time stamped at 12:12 a.m. on November 16. Officers found blood splatter on the interior of the vehicle, along with some fingerprints. The prints have never been linked to anyone.
Robert’s murder is still unsolved.
