The Missing
Douglas J. Legg
Newcomb, New York
On July 10, 1971, 8 year old Douglas J. Legg was reported missing by his father William. At the time, the wealthy family was vacationing at a campsite on Doug’s uncle Myron’s 12,000 acre estate on the Santanoni Reserve near Newcomb, New York. This was a normal occurrence for the family to stay there for periods of time.
According to William, his son followed Myron into the woods surrounding the property to join him for a walk. Around 150 yards away from their campsite, Myron claims to have sent Douglas back to camp to put on long pants, as his legs weren’t protected from the poison ivy on the trail. Somehow, in those 150 yards, Douglas Legg vanished. Douglas was briefly spotted by his brother and cousin standing on a nearby bridge at around 3:30 p.m, which is the last time anyone would see him.
He never arrived at the campsite.
There was an extensive search that took place, with helicopters, K9’s and hundreds of volunteers, lasting six weeks. This was the largest search in New York State history.
Despite this, Douglas was never found.
There were rumors of foul play, but most people believe Douglas got lost or injured and passed away in the forest.
Douglas is described as Caucasian with blonde hair and blue eyes, standing at 4’ 6” and weighing 76 pounds. He was wearing a white short sleeved polo shirt with navy blue stripes on the collar, with navy blue shorts and black sneakers with a circular pattern on the soles. He has a slight speech impediment and his nickname is Dougie.
