The Murdered
Gail Ann Kalinowski
Manville, New Jersey

13 year old Gail Ann Kalinowski was reported missing from home at 1329 Green Street by her father on the night of September 8, 1971 in Manville, Somerset, New Jersey. It was said that Gail was at home ironing her clothes for school the next day. She left to go to a local store and never returned.
She was last seen at about 7:30 p.m. at the Parkway Deli on Dukes Parkway where she spoke to the workers. She said she was going home to get some money, suggesting she was going to return to the deli to make a purchase. At 8:05 p.m., Gail had arrived at home and she answered a telephone call from her aunt Dorothy, who lived close by. When her mother came home at 8:30 p.m., Gail was gone.
Gail’s sandals and broken glasses were found in an empty lot about 200 yards from her home, near the end of Green Street close to the border of Hillsborough, NJ. In later searches, her other sandal and two 1$ bills were located in the same lot.
It wasn’t until September 26th, when two teenagers were hunting in the Manville landfill area off of Dukes Parkway East, when they came across the 8th graders lifeless body. She was found on the south bank of the Raritan River in a drainage canal and was still wearing the same outfit she was last seen in. Her death was determined to be a homicide.
Authorities at one point, had a suspect that was questioned, but no arrests were ever made.
There were many rumors around town, one was that a Manville Police Officer was the culprit and it was covered up.
Gail was described as a calm and happy girl, but a bit shy. She often played with the neighborhood kids and was kind to everyone she met.
Gail Ann Kalinowski’s murder remains unsolved.
