At 10:00 p.m. on December 4, 1998, 21 year old Yale University senior Suzanne Jovin was found brutally stabbed near Edgehill and East Rock Road in New Haven Connecticut, just minutes after returning keys from a volunteer event and emailing a friend about retrieving borrowed GRE materials. (Graduate Record Examinations: a standardized test used for admission to graduate and business school programs.)
Despite years of investigation, multiple leads, and the efforts of retired detectives, the case remains unsolved. Witnesses reported a man sprinting from the area, neighbors heard a heated argument and screams, and a tan/brown van was seen nearby; yet no arrest has ever been made. Early suspicion toward her thesis adviser, James Van de Velde, was later dismissed, and investigators continue exploring other possibilities, including the unidentified GRE borrower and the mysterious “running man” that was seen wearing a green jacket. A sketch of this man was drawn. The state of Connecticut and Yale University are offering a combined $150,000 reward for information that finally leads to justice for Suzanne, a talented, compassionate and devoted student.
