Dawn Andrea Svocak, a 20 year old SUNY Plattsburgh art student, was reported missing on August 17, 1984, after she was last seen at. Blair’s, a local bar just steps from her Clinton Street apartment in Plattsburgh, New York. When she didn’t return home, loved ones raised the alarm, and items believed to belong to her, a boot, belt, and knife, were later found in a nearby alley. One month later, Dawn’s remains were discovered in a cornfield north of the city and identified through dental records. Her death was ruled a homicide due to blunt force trauma. Decades later, investigators believe some evidence may have been deliberately planted to mislead the search, and advances in DNA technology have renewed hope for answers. Despite more than 750 leads, no suspect has ever been named. Dawn, remembered by friends as kind and creative and known by the nickname “Magic,” was honored in 2014 when the alley central to the case was renamed Dawn Alley. Authorities continue to urge anyone with information to come forward so her family and community can finally have justice.
