The Murdered Wanda Cartagena

The Murdered
Wanda Cartagena
Springfield, Massachusetts

๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ Remembering Wanda Cartagena ๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ

At 4:30 p.m. on August 14, 1989, 17 year old Wanda Cartagena was found murdered in her Mill Street apartment in Springfield, Massachusetts, a tragedy that left her family and community shattered. Wandaโ€™s boyfriend came home from work to find her with a plastic bag over her head that was secured with a drawstring.ย
Wanda, a devoted young mother, was pregnant with a baby girl at the time, while their toddler named Amanda was found unharmed in her play pen nearby.ย
Just hours earlier, Wanda had been laughing with family at her aunt Idaliz Ortizโ€™s home, hesitant to stay late because she worried her boyfriend would be upset. By the next day, Idaliz received the devastating news that Wanda had been killed, a loss she still wonders could have been prevented. Described as trusting, sweet, and deeply loving toward her siblings and her children, Wanda was โ€œreally just a kid herself.โ€
Now, decades later, the Hampden County District Attorneyโ€™s Office is reexamining her case using new DNA technology, hoping to finally bring answers and justice.ย
