In October of 1985, 31 year old mother of four Maria Germano Evangelista vanished after leaving a methadone clinic in Brighton, Massachusetts, where she had been seeking help for a long-term heroin addiction. She told others she was heading home but never arrived, and her family reported her missing on October 15. Six days later, her body was discovered in a shallow grave in the woods off Chestnut Street in Upton. Her death was ruled a homicide, and investigators have long believed the person responsible knew Maria. Despite her struggles, Maria was a high school graduate who attended the University of Miami, tried repeatedly to rebuild her life, and was committed to treatment at the time of her disappearance. Nearly four decades later, her case remains unsolved, though authorities say there are suspects and the focus is on gathering enough evidence to move forward.
