Her mother, who had dropped her off just before the beach opened, was the last known person to see her. When local children arrived later for swimming lessons, Molly was gone, her sandals, lifeguard gear, and belongings left behind at the lifeguard stand.
The search that followed quickly grew into one of the largest investigations in the history of Massachusetts. Hundreds of volunteers, police officers, and investigators combed woods, fields, and ponds across the region. Posters with Molly’s smile spread across New England, transforming the case into a symbol of a community desperate for answers. For years the mystery lingered, fueled by sightings, tips, and theories, but no confirmed explanation of what had happened that summer morning.
Three years later, in 2003, Molly’s remains were discovered in a wooded area several miles from the pond. Sumner Sr. as the prime suspect based on witness descriptions, circumstantial evidence, and statements from people who knew him. However, he died in 2016 without ever being charged, leaving the case officially unsolved.
