🕊️ A Life Cut Short: The Unsolved Murder of Rosetta Jean-Baptiste 🕊️

On the morning of December 10, 1993, 18 year old Rosetta Jean-Baptiste was found dead in Room #2 of the Maple Shade Motel in Ramsey, New Jersey, in a case that remains unsolved decades later. An autopsy ruled her death a homicide caused by “mechanical asphyxiation from ligature compression to her neck” and revealed she was nine months pregnant with a baby boy, news that devastated her family, who were unaware of the pregnancy. Rosetta, a quiet and reserved 11th grade student at Ramapo High School, had immigrated from Haiti with her family three years earlier and lived in Spring Valley, New York. She was last seen checking into the motel on the evening of December 9 with an unidentified man described as a light-skinned Black male in his 30s or 40s, stocky, about 5’8” to 5’9”, and weighing 200–220 pounds. Despite composite sketches and early investigative efforts, no suspect was ever identified, and the lack of evidence caused the case to go cold. Her murder deeply affected her family and community, and investigators continue to hope that new information may one day bring justice for Rosetta and her unborn child. 💔

Authorities continue to seek information related to the case and urge anyone with knowledge to contact the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Cold Case Task Force at 201-226-5532, http://www.bcpo.net/coldcase or by email at coldcaseunit@bcpo.net
