The Murdered Joseph Carroll

The Murdered
Joseph Carroll
Baltimore County, Maryland

🕊️ Cold Case in Essex, Maryland🕵️‍♂️

On the morning of July 11, 1981, a father and his children were fishing along the Back River, about 200 yards off Virginia Avenue in Precinct 11, Essex, MD, when they noticed a body floating in the water and immediately contacted police. Responding officers discovered a fully clothed adult male with clear signs of trauma to his upper body. The victim was later identified as 25 year old Joseph Carroll. Despite the discovery, the investigation soon went cold, as Carroll had been largely estranged from his family, leaving detectives with few personal connections or leads to help piece together what happened. An autopsy determined that Joseph died from upper-body trauma, likely caused by blunt force, and not from a gunshot wound. At the time, DNA technology was still in its early stages, and the length of time the body spent in the water further limited the available forensic evidence. Even so, Baltimore County Police remain committed to the case and continue to pursue justice using modern investigative advances.

Anyone with information that could assist police is urged to contact the Baltimore County Police Homicide Unit at 410-877-3943 or Metro Crime Stoppers at 1-866-7LOCKUP.🕯️📞
