On January 12, 1984, seven year old Gary Grant Jr. vanished during a school day off in Atlantic City after telling his mother he had a “secret appointment.” When he failed to return home for dinner, a frantic search began, led in part by his father, an Atlantic City police detective. Two days later, Gary’s bludgeoned body was found wrapped in a rug in a vacant lot just two blocks from his home, killed with a metal pipe. Investigators initially focused on Gary’s 12 year old friend Carl “Boo” Mason, who is mentally disabled and gave a coerced confession later ruled inadmissible; he was ultimately cleared, leaving the case without a suspect. Two years later, chilling graffiti and anonymous 911 calls appeared, taunting police and suggesting Gary’s murder was “payback” against his father for an arrest he had made; in one call on March 8, 1986, a man chillingly asked if he could “collect a reward on my own self for the murder of Gary Grant” before boasting, “You’re never going to catch me,” while a second call on June 2, 1986, claimed a specific man had confessed to killing Gary in retaliation for his father, yet he was investigated and no arrests were ever made. Despite decades of investigations, disturbing threats, and renewed attention from prosecutors who still vow to find justice, the brutal killing of Gary Grant Jr. remains one of New Jersey’s most haunting unsolved cold cases, with his family still waiting for answers nearly four decades later.
