Unsolved Homicide: Remembering Lloyd “Pat” Fitzgerald
Lloyd “Pat” Fitzgerald was a 27 year old electrician, husband, and father of three who disappeared on October 2, 1972, after leaving a Burlington dentist’s home where he had been doing electrical work. Employed by the City of Burlington Electric and Light Department, Fitzgerald was well-liked, had no criminal record, and no known enemies. Five months later, on March 4, 1973, his partially decomposed body was discovered in a remote area of the Intervale near the Winooski River and Ethan Allen Homestead; he had been shot and killed, and his death was ruled a homicide. Despite extensive investigations by the Burlington Police Department and Vermont State Police Major Crime Unit, no one has ever been held accountable. Decades later, authorities reopened the case after witnesses came forward with new information, hoping that advances in forensic technology and renewed interviews might finally bring answers. Investigators have also revisited a possible connection to another 1972 shooting, but the case remains open.
Anyone with information about Fitzgerald’s movements before his death is urged to contact the Major Crime Unit at 802-244-8727.
