On September 20, 1984, the quiet town of Jay, Vermont was shaken when husband and wife Roland Hanel, 49, and Maram Hanel, 32, were found murdered in their home on Gendron Road. The couple, known locally for their active, healthy lifestyle and love of skiing, had last been seen alive at their residence about a week earlier. They were discovered by a close friend, both victims of a fatal shooting, and their deaths were ruled a homicide by the Vermont State Police Major Crime Unit. Investigators determined they had likely been killed several days before they were found, though the exact timeline remains unclear, and no weapon was recovered from the scene.
Roland, a German native who previously owned a plastics manufacturing business in Montreal, and Maram, his wife of three years, lived a quiet life in Jay and were described as friendly but private. Over the years, numerous theories about a possible motive have been explored, ranging from personal connections to far-fetched international speculation, but none have been supported by evidence. In 1986, the FBI helped develop a behavioral profile suggesting the killer likely knew the couple and had been inside their home before, yet no arrests have ever been made.
