The Murdered
Doris E. Baker
Barre, Vermont

Justice for Doris E. Baker 🕊️🔍
Doris E. Baker, a 45 year old wife, mother of two, and co-owner of Floor Covering Store, Inc. in Barre, Vermont, was brutally murdered on February 19, 1958. She was discovered behind the store counter by customer John Corrigan around 4:40 p.m. Doris had been struck seven times with a ball-peen hammer and her throat was cut, and authorities believed the crime may have involved sexual assault or a robbery gone wrong. $46 was missing from the store, yet her purse containing over $150 was left untouched. That same evening, a burglary at St. Monica’s Rectory and a fire at the nearby school appeared to share physical evidence with the murder, deepening community fear and panic. Several suspects were considered, including Parran Youngsblood, a deaf/mute man who was seen in Barre at the local movie theater that day. He was later shot and killed in Georgia that same year for supposedly kidnapping a 7 year old child. Doris Baker’s homicide remains unsolved, leaving Barre with lingering questions and heartbreak. 🕯️
