Michelle Howard, 32, was last seen by her family on November 24, 2001, in Atlantic City New Jersey, where she had grown up and made a name for herself as a talented and passionate basketball player at Chelsea Heights School and the Uptown School Complex. Known affectionately as “Shelby” by her family, Michelle was remembered as vibrant, outgoing, and the life of the party, a loving mother with a determined, go-getter spirit who always wanted the best for her daughter, Dawn. After facing difficult periods in her life, Michelle dreamed of starting over in California with her daughter, a plan she spoke about during what would be their final conversation over Thanksgiving weekend. Two days after she was last seen, on November 26, 2001, Michelle’s body was discovered along Estelle Avenue in Mizpah, New Jersey. An autopsy determined she died from asphyxia associated with aspiration of gastric contents, along with multiple blunt force injuries to her head, neck, and torso; her death was ruled a homicide. Despite ongoing investigation by the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office, no suspects have been identified. Nearly two decades later, Dawn continues to advocate tirelessly for answers, sharing her mother’s story through outlets like Dateline NBC and urging anyone with information to come forward, as Prosecutor Damon Tyner has emphasized that time can change circumstances, and justice for Michelle Howard is still possible. 🕯️💔
