The Suspicious Death of Shawn O’Brien
Cranston, Rhode Island

🕊️ Remembering Shawn O’Brien 💔
Shawn P. O’Brien was a loving father, a talented carpenter, and a kind, genuine man whose life ended far too soon in Cranston, Rhode Island in late July of 2006. Those closest to Shawn remember him for his humor, kindness, and generosity. His daughter, Natalia often described him as “the funniest man she had ever known” and someone who would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it. Although Shawn struggled with drug and alcohol use during parts of his life, which contributed to Shawn eventually separating with Natalia’s mother Amy when she was two years old, his love for his daughter never wavered. Natalia grew up living with her mother and grandmother but reconnected with her father when she was nine years old. She fondly remembers the time they spent together, especially when Shawn taught her how to play baseball and the countless evenings they spent watching Boston Red Sox games together.
At the time of his death, however, Shawn’s living situation had become unstable. In 2006 he was living in the basement apartment of a home at 145 Pleasant Street in Cranston, that was owned by a man named Armand Rouleau, who lived in the ground-level apartment with his girlfriend, Lynn Hallal. Tensions in the home had been growing. On June 8, 2006, police responded to a disturbance between Shawn and Armand regarding noise levels late at night. During the encounter, Armand told the responding officer he wanted to file a report to assist in evicting Shawn. During the same incident, Shawn was arrested on an outstanding Superior Court warrant for failure to appear.
July 21, 2006 began as a normal day for Shawn. He went to work as usual, picked up his paycheck, cashed it at the bank, and returned home. Around 3:30 p.m., he called Amy, who later stopped by with their daughter and brought him his favorite sandwich from Carmine’s Sub Shop on Atwood Avenue. The three made plans to attend St. Mary’s Feast, a local summer festival, later that evening. Unfortunately, Natalia developed a headache and the plans were canceled.
Shawn did not want to remain home that evening with his landlord and Lynn, particularly because he had previously expressed concerns about threats she had allegedly made toward him. Instead, he asked Amy to drop him off at a local bar called Billy’s Frosted Mug. Before heading out, Shawn called his sister Erin to see if she was in town and wanted to meet up, but when he learned she was away, he decided to go alone. Amy dropped him off around 6:10 p.m.
The following day, Shawn failed to show up for work between 7:00 and 8:00 a.m., which immediately raised concern because it was very unlike him to miss work without calling. Later that evening, around 5:30 p.m., his other sister Karen stopped by his apartment to check on him. What she discovered inside was devastating.
Karen found Shawn lying on the floor unresponsive and immediately called 911, telling dispatchers that her brother might be experiencing a seizure. Shawn had a history of seizures, and when first responders arrived they initially believed that might have been the case. He was lying on his stomach with his feet facing the door and his head resting in a small pool of blood. Natalia later said that as Karen arrived at the apartment, Armand ran outside shouting for her to come inside quickly because Shawn had been having a seizure for over an hour.
Emergency responders rushed Shawn to the hospital. At first, they believed the blood may have come from Shawn biting the inside of his mouth during a seizure. However, doctors at the hospital quickly realized that his injuries were far more severe than a typical seizure-related injury. Medical staff documented extensive brain swelling caused by blunt force trauma to his head, as well as several cuts, bruises, and abrasions. Despite efforts to save him, Shawn’s condition did not improve. On July 25, 2006, three days after he was found, Shawn was taken off life support. He was just 34 years old.
Two days after his death, police sealed Shawn’s apartment as a crime scene and returned to investigate. However, the investigation was brief and ultimately produced few answers. The medical examiner determined that Shawn’s official cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head. The autopsy revealed that his skull had been fractured and that he had multiple other head injuries. Cocaine was also found in his system. Because of Shawn’s history of seizures and the lack of witnesses who could explain exactly what happened, the medical examiner officially classified the manner of death as “undetermined.”
Questions about what truly happened to Shawn continued to linger. A year after his death, Cranston police named his landlord Armand Rouleau and Rouleau’s girlfriend Lynn Hallal as persons of interest. Reports also indicated that Lynn had been arrested for allegedly assaulting Armand on July 21, the same night Shawn was last seen alive. Both individuals reportedly had prior criminal records.
Years later, the case gained renewed attention when independent forensic pathologist Dr. Shiping Bao reviewed the evidence. He concluded that Shawn’s injuries were consistent with a skull fracture and intracranial hemorrhage caused by a strike from another person. In his professional opinion, the manner of death should be reclassified as a homicide rather than remaining undetermined.
Additional concerns were raised when Shawn’s family returned to his apartment to collect his belongings. They reported discovering more blood stains throughout the apartment that appeared to have been covered by various items. According to them, blood was visible on the walls, floors, doors, pillows, blankets, and even dining room chairs.
Nearly two decades later, Shawn’s daughter Natalia continues to fight for answers. Determined to honor her father’s memory, she has worked tirelessly to bring awareness to the case and push for it to be officially recognized as a homicide investigation. She describes herself as relentless in the pursuit of justice for her father.🕯️
