🔎🕯️ The Unsolved Murder of Kathy Luongo

The mysterious 1984 murder of Kathy Luongo remains one of Warwick Rhoda Island’s most haunting unsolved cases. Decades later, the tragedy still raises questions about what truly happened to the young mother whose life ended so suddenly.
Kathy Nicastro Luongo was only 28 years old when she died. She had been married for two years and was raising a young son who was not yet two years old. Friends described her as energetic, healthy, outgoing, and deeply devoted to her child. She volunteered with Weight Watchers, regularly visited the tanning salon Tan Tasia, and was known as a talented seamstress.
May 18, 1984 began as a normal day for Kathy. Around 5 p.m., she went to the gym at Holiday Health in the Warwick Mall. Later that evening she had dinner with two friends at a restaurant called September’s. The friends recalled that she seemed completely like herself, relaxed, cheerful, and in good spirits. She ordered a grilled cheese sandwich, and no alcohol was consumed during the meal. After dinner, at approximately 8:30 p.m., Kathy returned home to the house she shared with her husband on Hamilton Avenue in Warwick.
According to her husband, Kathy asked him to go back out with her later that evening, but he declined. Their marriage had reportedly been strained, and counseling had been suggested but refused. During the argument that followed, Kathy removed her wedding rings before leaving the house in her car without telling her husband where she was going. It would be the last time she was seen alive by someone who knew her.
The following morning, Saturday, May 19, Kathy failed to appear for an early appointment at the tanning salon and missed a scheduled Weight Watchers speaking engagement at Governor Francis Plaza. Throughout that day, her blue 1976 Toyota Celica hatchback with Rhode Island vanity plates reading “LUONGO” was reportedly seen several times around Warwick. One sighting occurred around 6 p.m. on Post Road near City Hall. Witnesses claimed the person driving the car appeared to be a large man.
The next day, Sunday, May 20, 1984, at approximately 12:22 p.m., Kathy’s body was discovered inside her car. The vehicle was parked near a baseball field behind City Hall, close to the city’s Public Safety Complex and the Warwick Fire Department. The doors were locked, and the keys were inside the vehicle. Kathy’s body was found lying in the back seat, with her head positioned behind the driver’s seat and the keys on the floor. At first, authorities believed she had died from a drug overdose. However, an autopsy later revealed the true cause of death: manual strangulation.
Despite the shocking discovery, no one has ever been charged with Kathy’s murder. Her husband was initially considered the primary suspect, but investigators did not find enough evidence to bring charges. In 1998, the case briefly saw renewed attention when a lead involving a former neighbor surfaced. DNA was collected from the individual, but the results were inconclusive, and the investigation stalled once again.
For many years afterward, the case remained largely inactive. However, increased public attention and renewed discussions have encouraged investigators to take another look at the evidence and witness accounts. Supporters and advocates continue to share information and revisit the details in hopes that someone who knows something will finally come forward.

More than four decades after her death, the murder of Kathy Luongo remains unsolved. What happened during the hours between when she left her home and when her body was discovered is still a mystery. Yet the central truth remains unchanged: a young mother lost her life, and the person responsible has never been held accountable. Until that question is answered, the case of Kathy Luongo continues to linger as one of Warwick’s most troubling unsolved crimes.
