Chrismely Hidalgo was just 22 years old when her life was tragically cut short on January 27, 2013. A young mother living in Paterson, New Jersey, she was reported missing by her family on January 26, only one day before her body was discovered in Newark along the Route 22 west entrance ramp. Investigators determined that Chrismely had been strangled to death before her body was thrown from a moving vehicle traveling approximately 60 miles per hour, an impact that caused severe head trauma. Despite the violence of the crash, authorities confirmed she was already deceased before being thrown. Chrismely was last seen near Union and Redwood Avenue in Paterson, an area she was known to frequent. She struggled with addiction and was reportedly involved in sex work, leading her family to believe she was killed in Paterson and later transported to Newark.
In the months and years following her death, frustration grew among her loved ones as the case appeared to stall. Her sister, Yohanaka, publicly expressed belief that police failed to properly pursue a key suspect. According to the family, DNA belonging to a man was found under Chrismely’s fingernails, and when questioned, he allegedly had visible scratches on his face. The man claimed the injuries were the result of consensual “rough sex,” and authorities released him without charges. He has never been publicly identified. Chrismely’s family strongly disputes that explanation, insisting she would not have engaged in such behavior willingly and that the investigation into him was insufficient.
 Over time, updates have been scarce, and investigators have released very few details. Early hopes that surveillance footage might provide clues faded when it was revealed cameras in the area were not functioning properly. Despite the family’s efforts, including appeals to local officials, no arrests have been made, no motive has been confirmed, and Chrismely Hidalgo’s murder remains unsolved.
