The Missing
Maryanne Wesolowski
Glens Falls, Warren County, New York
On August 18, 1971, 13 year old Maryanne Wesolowski vanished after walking away from her home at 44 Hudson Avenue in Glens Falls New York at 3:00 p.m. She was heading to meet her friends or other relatives (sources differ) to eat at a local sandwich shop and to go swimming at a beach area called Haviland Cove in the same town. She never arrived and she has been missing ever since.
Maryanne is described as being a white female with light brown hair and blue eyes. She had crooked teeth. She was between 4’ 6” and 4 11” at the time, and weighed around 90 pounds. She was last seen wearing a white T-shirt with red and white shorts and a black leather belt. She has an appendix removal scar on her abdomen and a butterfly shaped scar on her chest.
According to some sources, the family reported that Maryanne had written a note to her mother saying “I’m leaving, I might miss you.” Maryanne had also written a letter to her sister but never mailed it, stating she hated Glens Falls and couldn’t wait for summer to start.
Maryanne’s brother believes she left of her own accord and is still alive. He was just 7 years old when his sister vanished. He says there were “a lot of problems at home.” He described her as a shy and withdrawn girl but says she seemed generally happy at the time.
A man named Kenneth Yarter was questioned by police in 1995 about Maryanne’s disappearance. He lived in the same area at the time and worked at a restaurant near to where Maryanne was last seen. However, there is no definitive proof he had any connection.
As of 1996, Mr. Yarter is currently serving a life sentence in prison for kidnapping and raping two women in Florida and one woman in New Jersey in 1977. He was also charged with murdering a 16 year old girl named Susan Zanta in Argyle, New York in 1974. He will be eligible for release in 2026.
No other suspects have ever been named. Maryanne’s case remains unsolved.
