Two Sons Lost, A Mother Still Waiting for Justice 💙🙏

What should have been an ordinary summer afternoon turned into a family’s worst nightmare on July 13, 2012. Eighteen-year-old Shawn Plummer, a high school football player with dreams of becoming a mechanic, was riding his bicycle near his home on Seagirt Boulevard in Far Rockaway, Queens, NY, when gunfire erupted. Another teenager was riding on the handlebars of Shawn’s bicycle as the shots rang out. Shawn was struck in the forehead and tragically lost his life. His mother, Sharon, has always believed her son was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time; that the bullets were meant for someone else. He was an innocent young man whose future was stolen in an instant.

The violence that claimed Shawn’s life did not stop there. On the very same day, another shooting occurred nearby, and the following day, yet another person was shot in the neighborhood. Fearing she would lose another child to the relentless violence that plagued the community, Sharon made the heartbreaking decision to move her family to Brooklyn in hopes of giving her younger son, Neshawn, a safer future.

Tragically, that hope was shattered just three years later. On the evening of August 30, 2015, 16-year-old Neshawn Plummer returned to Far Rockaway to visit friends. While riding his bicycle only two blocks from where his older brother had been killed, he was caught in the middle of gunfire between rival gangs. Neshawn, who dreamed of one day becoming a pediatrician and helping children, was shot in the head. He was rushed to St. John’s Hospital, but despite every effort to save him, he was taken off life support two days later. Surveillance videos captured several men running from the scene, but their identities remain unknown.

No parent should ever have to bury a child, let alone two. Sharon has endured an unimaginable loss, yet she has turned her grief into purpose by becoming an advocate against gun violence, determined to prevent other families from experiencing the same heartbreak. But advocacy alone cannot replace the justice her sons deserve.

Shawn and Neshawn’s lives mattered. They were more than victims of senseless violence, they were young men with dreams, families who loved them, and futures that should have been theirs. Their cases remain unsolved, and their family continues to wait for answers.
