The Missing
Frederick Andrew Holmes
22 month old Frederick ”Tookie” Andrew Holmes was just a toddler when he vanished from his home in Grahamsville, Sullivan County, New York on the morning of Wednesday, May 25, 1955. His older siblings were at school. He was last seen by his mother Gertrude as he was walking down the driveway at 9:00 a.m. He was playing outside and spoke to the family’s landlord that sometimes stayed with them, as he was working in a shed in the yard. Gertrude was crouched down in her vegetable garden at this time.
Nearly 1,000 people searched the area for a month, including police officers and bloodhounds, helicopters, firemen, and other volunteers. Police ripped away floorboards in the garage of the house, drained a nearby pond and even went so far as to dig up Gertrude’s garden, all to no avail. No trace of the boy has ever been found. Freddie’s parents were investigated and cleared as suspects. The landlord was also investigated and had some stolen items hidden in his garage. He was charged and jailed for that. But he was never named a suspect in Freddie’s disappearance.
Freddie’s father, “Rod” committed suicide in 1968.
Gertrude believed her son was kidnapped and sold. She passed away in 1979.
Investigators theorized that Freddie fell into one of the gorges that slice across the mountain. Another theory is that he was grabbed by a black bear. But there were never any remains or clothing located.
Freddie was 2’ 5” and 30 pounds, with blonde curly shoulder length hair and blue eyes. He was last seen wearing faded brown corduroy overalls, a long sleeve polo style shirt, gray socks and brown shoes.
Freddie’s sisters Dorothy and Janet are continuing to search for him.
