The Missing
Valerie Lorraine Cuccia
Brooklyn, NY

Valerie Lorraine Cuccia, a 20-year-old college student and musician from Canarsie, Brooklyn, NY, disappeared on May 4, 1974. That evening, she met a friend at P.S. 211 Park in Brooklyn, and the two hitchhiked to the Banana Fish nightclub, later called the Mustard Seed, at 96th Street and 3rd Avenue in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn.
Inside the club, the friends separated. Around 9:00 p.m., Valerie’s friend saw her talking with two “hard looking white men” and later getting into their blue car with Massachusetts license plates. The friend believed she may have been forced into the vehicle. Valerie was never seen again.
At the time, she lived with her parents and younger sister on East 96th Street in Canarsie. She attended the City College of New York, and loved playing guitar. She left behind both of her guitars at home.
Her parents spent years searching for her, following false leads and tips from psychics and supposed witnesses. The loss devastated the family; both parents passed away without answers. Valerie’s 2 brothers, one being a retired New York State Police investigator, have continued the search. They submitted their mother’s DNA to a state database, hoping it might one day match unidentified remains.
Valerie was described having long black hair and brown eyes, standing at 5’6” and weighing 120 pounds. She was last seen wearing a plaid coat with a fur collar, a striped polo shirt, camel colored pants, and black boots with studs. She also had a scar on her left calf.
Her case remains unsolved, and authorities have not ruled out the possibility she was abducted or murdered.
