The Missing
Donald Nelson DeVinney
Wolcott, New York

On April 18, 1975, 16 year old Donald Nelson DeVinney was last seen in Wolcott, Wayne County, New York. He resided with his foster parents on Younglove Road and had spent the evening fishing with his stepbrother at the Red Lake inlet off Larkin Road. At approximately 7:00 p.m., DeVinney decided to go canoeing alone in their seventeen-foot yellow fiberglass canoe. Around 7:30 p.m., he was observed on the horizon heading out onto Lake Ontario.
Later that evening, the canoe was seen adrift and unoccupied on the lake. Three days after Donald’s disappearance, it washed ashore in Jefferson County, New York. At the time, the lake water temperature was about 39 degrees Fahrenheit, and the canoe contained no life jackets or other survival equipment. Despite extensive search efforts, Donald’s body was never recovered, and he is presumed to have drowned.
At the time of his disappearance, Donald DeVinney was described as a white male, 16 years of age, standing at 5’6” and weighing 130 pounds. He had brown hair and blue eyes. He was last seen wearing a black and white pullover sweater, blue jeans, a long brown corduroy coat with a fur collar, and gray cowboy boots. He was known to carry a black truck driver style wallet with a chain and a hunting knife attached to his belt.
This case remains under the jurisdiction of the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, which can be contacted at 315-946-9711.
