Chaim Weiss was a bright and well-liked 15 year old student at an Orthodox Jewish yeshiva (a traditional Jewish educational institution) in Long Beach, New York, when he was found dead in his dorm room on the morning of November 1, 1986, after failing to appear for Sabbath prayers. He lived alone in one of only two single rooms, and investigators found no signs of forced entry, robbery, or a struggle. His body had been moved from the bed to the floor, the window was left open despite the cold, and memorial candles were burning, details police believed reflected Jewish death rituals, suggesting the killer may have been familiar with the faith. The murder weapon was never found, and the case quickly grew cold despite extensive investigation. Over the years, theories have ranged from an outsider’s attack or a fellow student’s jealousy to the possibility of abuse within the yeshiva and a cover up. Suspicion deepened after Chaim’s father later revealed troubling events before the murder, including emotional phone calls from Chaim, repeated attempts by the school principal to meet with him privately, and Chaim’s reluctance to discuss those meetings. Police have since stated they believe the killer was likely a student or staff member, and the case has been reopened multiple times, with renewed pleas for information and a reward offered. Nearly four decades later, Chaim Weiss’s murder remains one of New York’s most haunting unsolved cases, leaving his family and community still searching for answers.
