🏘️ Hardwick Unsolved Tragedy: Bernard Daniel Ewen

Bernard Ewen, a well-known and friendly 64 year old resident of Hardwick, Vermont, was found dead in his second-floor apartment at the Bemis Block on July 16, 1977. Known for walking everywhere with his radio and walking stick, Bernard was last seen the evening before cashing a $138 check at a nearby grocery store. When a neighbor grew concerned after hearing strange noises overnight and not seeing Bernard the next day, he entered the apartment and discovered Bernard on the kitchen floor. Though the scene initially appeared accidental, bruising on Bernard’s face and neck led investigators to determine he had been strangled, and robbery was considered a possible motive after some of his money appeared to be missing. Despite extensive investigation by Vermont State Police, no suspect was ever identified, and Bernard’s murder, which occurred the same day as another strangling death in Hardwick (Joan Rogers) remains unsolved.
