Russell “Russ” Bovit, a 31 year old dairy farmer from Walden, Vermont, was reported missing on May 11, 1986, after failing to show up for a scheduled real estate appointment. He was last seen five days earlier on the evening of May 6 at his farm, Last Resort Farm, where two friends had visited him. The following day, his light blue 1974 Renault was found stuck in the mud about four miles from his home, with no signs anyone tried to move it. Blood was discovered in the car’s trunk and passenger seat, as well as on his mattress at home, and testing confirmed it all came from the same person, believed to be Russ. Despite reports from a convicted murderer claiming Russ’s body was dumped in Lake Willoughby, extensive searches found no evidence. His remains were never found.
Authorities believe Russ was murdered, though robbery was ruled out, and private investigators later suggested drugs may have been involved, even though Russ did not drink or use drugs.
