On April 13, 2020, 38-year-old Ralph Jean-Marie, known to friends and family as “Rizz,” was last seen around 1:00 a.m. in Barre, Vermont. Ralph had been staying with his girlfriend at the Hollow Inn on South Main Street when, following an alleged argument, he stepped outside to get some air. He was never seen again.
Later that afternoon, at approximately 2:00 p.m., a call was placed to Ralph’s medical provider requesting a prescription refill. The call raised immediate concern because Ralph had left behind his cell phone, wallet, identification, glasses, and essential medications at the motel. It remains unknown who made that call. Loved ones say this behavior was completely out of character, especially given that Ralph had several underlying health conditions and relied on his prescribed medication daily.
Ralph was officially reported missing on April 15, after friends and family had not heard from him for nearly 68 hours. Since then, investigators with the Barre City Police Department have conducted dozens of interviews, carried out more than 30 searches, secured over 17 court orders, and even deployed sonar technology to search nearby Vermont quarries. Authorities have publicly stated they believe Ralph may have been harmed and continue to pursue leads.
At the time of his disappearance, Ralph was living at the motel through a state housing voucher program. His relationship with his girlfriend had reportedly been troubled, with a history of domestic violence; in 2014, she was convicted of assaulting him. Ralph had told relatives that she struggled with drug use and had relationships with other men. Although she was arrested on unrelated charges months after Ralph vanished, she has not been charged or officially named as a suspect in his disappearance.
Supporters have organized protests and demonstrations, voicing frustration over what they believe was a delayed or insufficient initial police response. Some have expressed concern that Ralph being a Black, lower-income man may have affected the urgency of early efforts in his case.
At the time he vanished, Ralph was 5’10” and approximately 140 pounds, with brown eyes and black hair. He was last seen wearing gray pajama pants, a gray Carhartt jacket, black Adidas sneakers, and a black and gray hat with the word “King” on it. Though he had ties to Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and New York, he has not contacted any family members since his disappearance.
