Jonathan “Jon” Schaff was just 23 years old when he vanished in the early morning hours of January 18, 2014, after spending the night at the Riverside Pub in Granville, New York. Earlier that night, Jonathan was involved in a brief altercation inside the bar that left his eyeglasses broken and caused minor cuts on his scalp, but witnesses described the incident as a misunderstanding with no ongoing dispute. Around 4:30–5:00 a.m., Jonathan was seen leaving the bar on foot, heading east along Route 149 toward Pawlet, Vermont. Two individuals came forward saying they offered him a ride and walked with him part of the way to their vehicle, but after briefly stopping, Jonathan walked ahead of them. They say they lost sight of him. He seemed to have turned a corner and disappeared just moments later. He has never been heard from again. Jonathan was last known to be wearing a gray or light-blue hooded sweatshirt, a dark Carhartt jacket, dark blue jeans, and brown work boots. He stood 6’0” and weighed about 170 pounds, with brown hair, blue eyes, and several distinctive tattoos, including a spider web between the fingers of his left hand and an eagle tattoo. His cell phone was later found inside an abandoned tractor-trailer at a nearby trucking lot close to the Mettawee River, enforcing the belief that he made it into Vermont. Despite extensive searches over several years, including ground, aerial, dive, cadaver dog, river, and quarry searches, no trace of Jonathan was ever found. The case remains classified as endangered missing, with investigators believing the only possibilities are foul play or an unlikely voluntary disappearance.
