🧭 Missing Person: Robert Hughes 🏔️

Robert Hughes, a 59 year old man from Newfane, was last seen on August 17, 2008, at approximately 3:00 p.m., when he left his home in Williamsville, Vermont, reportedly heading to a business meeting in Provincetown, Massachusetts. The following day, around 12:30 p.m., an Appalachian Mountain Club shuttle dropped him off at the Zealand Falls Trailhead in the Pemigewasset Wilderness area of the White Mountain National Forest. He apparently attempted to make a reservation at the AMC Zealand Falls Hut using his cell phone, but the transaction was never completed.
On August 20, 2008, his wife received an envelope through the U.S. Postal Service containing letters addressed to family members in which Hughes stated he intended to commit suicide in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Authorities later located his vehicle at the AMC Highland House in Crawford Notch, exactly where he had indicated it would be in his letters. An extensive search of the surrounding wilderness by New Hampshire State Police and Fish & Wildlife officials yielded no trace of Hughes or his remains.
Hughes, described as a white male with gray hair and blue eyes, stood 6 feet tall and weighed approximately 190 pounds. He was reportedly despondent at the time of his disappearance. He was not an experienced hiker and was unfamiliar with the White Mountains area. Since August 17, 2008, there has been no activity on his cell phone, credit cards, or bank accounts, and foul play is not suspected. A graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Hughes was working as an architect at the time he vanished. His case remains unsolved and is still under investigation by both Vermont and New Hampshire authorities.
