🌙 The Disappearance of Suzanne Lyall 🌙
On the night of March 2, 1998, 19-year-old Suzanne Gloria Lyall, a sophomore at the State University of New York at Albany, vanished without a trace. After finishing her shift at Babbage’s in Crossgates Mall, she boarded a CDTA bus back to campus. A classmate reported seeing her exit at Collins Circle near her dorm, but Suzanne was never seen again. The next day, her family reported her missing. That afternoon, $20 was withdrawn from her bank account at a Stewart’s Shops convenience store in Albany using her debit card. Only Suzanne and her boyfriend, Richard Condon, knew her PIN. Although he had an alibi and was never charged, investigators have never fully ruled him out. The case later gained national attention when it was featured on the Investigation Discovery series Disappeared.
Suzanne was described by her family as bright, gentle, and deeply passionate about computers and poetry. After graduating with honors from Ballston Spa High School, she briefly attended SUNY Oneonta before transferring to SUNY Albany to pursue more challenging computer science coursework. She worked two jobs while studying, maintained close contact with her parents, and was known for her responsible nature. In the days before she disappeared, she had been focused on midterms and mentioned being short on cash, though she declined financial help from her mother.
The investigation into Suzanne’s disappearance was extensive. Police pursued hundreds of leads, searched large wooded areas near campus, and examined the mysterious ATM withdrawal. While a man seen near the ATM was eventually cleared, questions persisted about how someone could have known Suzanne’s PIN. Her Babbage’s name tag was later found in a parking lot near the bus stop, though it yielded no forensic evidence. Investigators explored multiple theories, including possible stalking, foul play, and connections to other crimes, but no arrests were ever made. In 2018, a New York State Police investigator stated that authorities believe Suzanne was likely the victim of homicide, though the case remains officially classified as a missing persons investigation.
More than two decades later, Suzanne Lyall’s disappearance remains unsolved, but her legacy endures through changes in the law and the relentless advocacy of her mother, who continues to seek answers. Suzanne’s story is not only one of mystery and loss, but also one of love, resilience, and the enduring fight for justice. 💜
