The Missing Bonita Karen Sanders

Case #: 114-86
County: Atlantic County
Bonita Sanders
Date of Last Contact: September 14, 1986
Date of Birth: September 17, 1984
Sex: Female
Race: Black
Height: 2’6
Weight: 30 lbs.
Hair: Black
Eyes: Brown

According to her mother, who is also named Bonita, Bonita Karen Sanders was last seen on September 14, 1986 strapped in a stroller on her front porch in the Virginia Court Apartments in the 900 block of Baltic Avenue in Atlantic City, New Jersey at 6:00 p.m. She was eating a popsicle and Bonita’s other children were playing outside at the time.
Bonita claimed that she looked outside at approximately 7:00 p.m and discovered her daughter had disappeared from her stroller. Bonita claimed she searched Baltic Avenue and the surrounding streets for Bonita Karen, but she was not located. She reported her daughter missing at approximately 8:30 p.m. The young girl has not been seen again.

Bonita Karen’s father, Abdul Salaam, was immediately eliminated as a possible suspect in his daughter’s case. He had been seeking custody of Bonita Karen at the time she vanished and was imprisoned on a robbery charge. He and Bonita were together for 8 years and Bonita had four children at the time, two of whom were Abdul’s. But the two were never legally married. Abdul has stated that he does not believe Bonita’s account of their daughters disappearance. There is a picture of Abdul Salaam posted above.
Allegedly, Bonita tried to abandon Bonita Karen at birth and also attempted to abandon another newborn after Bonita Karen disappeared. Bonita reportedly walked out of an Atlantic City hospital in 1984 and left Bonita Karen at the facility. She was not charged in that case, but Bonita did face charges when she gave birth to a son in October 1986, one month after Bonita Karen was last seen.
Bonita checked into Atlantic City Medical Center under the fake name “Laura Smith” to deliver, and was discharged on October 7, 1986. Bonita then left with her newborn son and took a cab to an Atlantic City bus terminal. She boarded a bus to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and left the baby lying face-down in a terminal restroom in Atlantic City, where he was rescued shortly after.
Bonita was sentenced to nine months in jail for endangering the welfare of child in January 1987 and her three other children were placed in foster homes. She was paroled after 5 months, but served another 15 months when she was arrested for shoplifting baby clothes while on parole.
The father of Bonita’s newborn son told authorities that she lied to him and told him she had an abortion when she was pregnant with the child. He did not know she had carried the baby to term and given birth until he was contacted by law enforcement. Bonita had three more sons after the one she abandoned in 1986.
The prosecutor in Bonita’s case told the court that she was uncooperative during the investigation into Bonita Karen’s disappearance. She provided false leads and also lied to authorities. Bonita evidently never inquired as to the status of her daughter’s case.
Abdul believes that his daughter was not abducted and has asked investigators to search the yard in the back of the Virginia Court Apartments for human remains. Authorities used cadaver sniffing dogs earlier in the case but could not locate any evidence in the area.
Abdul also stated that New Jersey’s Division of Youth and Family Services (DYFS) was supposed to be checking on Bonita Karen’s well-being prior to her disappearance at his request. DYFS claims they arrived at the Sander’s residence, only to discover no one was home during their first visit. By the time DYFS prepared for a second attempt to see Bonita Karen, she had vanished.
Abdul Salaam still continues to search for his daughter.
In 2009, authorities began searching a wooded area in Pleasantville, New Jersey for Bonita Karen’s remains. Reportedly, Bonita’s best friend went to the police and said Bonita had buried her daughter there.
Nothing was recovered at the search site, and investigators discontinued their efforts after a week. A forensic anthropologist noted that given Bonita Karen’s age and the amount of time that has passed since her disappearance, it’s possible that even if her body had been there at one time, there would be no trace of it now.
Some law enforcement officials believe that Bonita Karen may have choked to death on the popsicle stick she was holding on the day of her disappearance and was buried somewhere off the family’s residence. There is however, no evidence to support this theory.
Bonita Karen’s disappearance remains unsolved and is still open. Police now believe she was never kidnapped, but died on the day she vanished.

The Tragic Death of 28 Year Old Alex Toledo, will his Murderer Ever be Caught?

The Tragic Death of 28 Year Old Alex Toledo, will his Murderer
Ever be Caught?
I would like to discuss a murder that happened in Newark New Jersey in 2014, my husbands best
friend, Alex Toledo.
(Copied and pasted from the NJ.com article I have linked below)
NEWARK — A 28-year-old Newark man was shot and killed this afternoon outside his city home
near Branch Brook Park, prosecutors and relatives said.
The victim, whom prosecutors did not identify, died of an apparent gunshot wound shortly before 1
p.m. in the 200 block of North 7th Street, according to Katherine Carter, a spokeswoman for the
Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.
Carter did not say if authorities had a motive or suspect in the slaying.
Relatives and friends flocked to the scene this afternoon to mourn the man’s death, and one
woman was seen washing away blood stains outside of North 7th Street home.
People who described themselves as relatives of the slain man identified him as Alexander Toledo,
and said he lived on the street. He was a father of four, the relatives said.
Carter declined to comment further.
……
Alexander Toledo passed on May 4th 2014. He was a father of four, a loving uncle, a brother, a
son, and a great friend. Although I personally never met him, Alex and my husband Ken have
known each other since they were young children, Alex and his whole family treated Ken like one of
their own children. Many people were distraught over his passing. His older brother Eric apparently
was a witness to the incident, however I can’t verify it through any articles, it is just hearsay, so I
can not post any details here. I have only been able to find that one vague article on this incident.
Alexander was murdered in broad daylight on a Sunday right before 1pm and not ONE witness
came forward with any useful information. Understand that Newark is a rough and low income area,
and a lot of people do not cooperate with the police. The case has been absolutely stagnant. No
further updates from police to the family. With the 6 year anniversary of his death coming up in 2
days, If anyone else is able to dig deeper than I can, to find other articles, it would be appreciated.
As far as I can tell, Newark police seem to have stopped looking for answers. I have not even been
able to locate any obituary online for him. Close friends of the family had to pay for a burial plot for
Alex, however at that point in 2014 he did not have a headstone. It’s been a few years since being
down in Newark, so I am unsure if someone else has paid for a headstone since then. This is a low
income area, and it hurts my heart to know that his own family could not afford to bury him. I pray
for justice for my husband’s best friend, and answers for his family who deserve to know who killed
their beloved Alex.

(articles differ from April 1st to April 19th) She lived with her boyfriend, Stephen Szanyi in a house off routes 59 and 306, and she frequented the waterfront beach area off Haverstraw, NY, near the U.S gypsum plant. She has not been heard from since.
Her mom reported her missing later that year after the family suddenly stopped hearing from her by phone, which was unusual.
Her boyfriend at the time stated that Darlene would “drop out of sight from time to time,” and one day she simply “left and never came back.”
In April of 2011, there was an anonymous tip given to the Ramapo NY Police, that led to the re-opening of Darlene’s case. She may have been the victim of a homicide. The tip stated that an acquaintance described killing a woman and disposing of her body in 1981.
Ramapo police have been investigating another report that a woman’s body was found wrapped in a blanket with the name “Westchester County Moving Company” on it, shortly after Darlene vanished.
(SIDE NOTE: this is the only mention I was able to find about the company being referred to as Westchester Moving Company. All other references from this point on, are talking about the “Whalen’s Moving and Storage” company.)
Detectives aren’t clear on where the body was found or whether the description was a match. Ramapo police do know that an “as yet identified” law enforcement agency reached out to “Whalen’s Moving and Storage” of Mt. Kisco, NY, seeking information.
When paid a visit, they had with them a polaroid photo of a deceased woman, wrapped in a Whalen’s moving and storage moving blanket. She was murdered and disposed of. At this point, investigators believe the body was in fact Darlene, due to her boyfriend Stephen being an employee of Whalen’s Moving and Storage. It is not known which agency investigated this homicide, Whalen’s is a national company with many locations. Every employee that was questioned remembered being shown the picture and recalled the woman had brown hair and was Caucasian.

Conflicting Information: Looking around the internet for quite some time, I’ve noticed there are a few discrepancies in the articles.

  • The Charley project says Darlene was last seen on April 1st of 1981, but several other sites are saying she was last seen on April 19th.
  • There is also a mistake on the exact year the tip came in. Some say 2010, others say 2011.
  • There are two different names being used, one says “Westchester County Moving Company,” and the other one is “Whalen’s Moving and Storage”

PART TWO: Stephen Szanyi
I have been doing some digging on Darlene’s boyfriend, Stephen Szanyi. I found an article stating as of 2014, he lived in Newton, New Jersey, which is close to where I live. I found this:

(NOTE: this website has a crap ton of info on it that isn’t relevant. Scroll to the bottom of the page and you’ll eventually find a paragraph or so of his charges.)

Clearly this man has had many run ins with the law all over the place. Sentenced in Sussex county in 2013, but on the mugshots.com article, it shows that he is “currently in custody” so he may have other charges, or this is a mistake. It can’t be a coincidence that he worked at Whalen’s moving van company in the 80’s and then some picture surfaces of (supposedly) Darlene wrapped in a moving company blanket.
Another puzzle to me, where is the polaroid picture? And also, why is it becoming impossible to find the law agency that took on the case in the first place?
Too many questions and not enough answers!
There have been no other suspects.

Darlene’s mom passed away in 2006 without finding out what happened to her daughter.
If you have any information about this case, I urge you to contact the proper authorities.
