The Missing
Dawn Marie Mozino
Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania
Dawn Marie Mozino was 23 years old when she was last seen leaving the Bryn Mawr Hospital in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania on May 22, 1989. She was employed at the hospital as a hostess in the nutrition department. She was planning on taking the bus to her home in the 100 block of Eaton Drive in Wayne, PA after her shift. She may or may not have made it to the bus stop. She was never heard from again.
Dawn was considered “learning disabled”, due to her having the mental capacity of a 13-14 year old. She was involved in the Special Olympics in 1989 and won a few medals. She was considered a kind, independent and reliable woman who never missed work and always came home at night. She lived with her mother and sister but she supported herself financially, she had her own phone number and bank account.
Dawn is a white female with curly brown hair and brown eyes, standing at 4’10” and weighing 110 lbs at the time. She was last seen wearing a gray skirt, a white shirt, a maroon vest and a black bow tie. Her ears are pierced.
A friend of Dawn’s told the police that shortly before she disappeared, she was driving by the Hospital and saw Dawn talking with a man named Thomas W. Hawkins Jr. The friend positively identified him in a photograph lineup.
Dawn and Thomas knew each other because he worked with her at the Paoli Rehabilitation Center before she started working at the Bryn Mawr Hospital. He even used to pick Dawn up from the bus stop and drive her the rest of the way to the rehab.
Her mother stated that Thomas wanted to work at the Hospital with Dawn, and asked her to help him get an interview there several times.
Thomas Hawkins Jr. was previously in jail for six years for murdering a teenage girl in 1980. He pleaded guilty, and was paroled and roaming free by 1986.
Once Dawn was reported missing, detectives searched the town, looking in the woods, in storm drains, and along railroad tracks, but nothing was ever located.
In 1989 after Dawn disappeared, Thomas was charged with his 14 year old nieces rape and murder. In 1990 he was sentenced to death for this crime.
Authorities tried to strike a deal with Thomas, telling him they would give him a life sentence instead of the death penalty if he told them what he did to Dawn. He still denied any involvement in her case.
There is a tree that was planted in Radnor Park to celebrate Dawn’s life. Her siblings visit the tree often.
Dawn’s case remains unsolved.
