On February 13, 1973, 12-year-old Linda Lee St. Germaine disappeared without a trace from the Lake Edge Motel on Route 9 in Peru, New York, where her family was staying temporarily after their home had been severely damaged in a fire. What should have been a temporary refuge became the last place Linda was ever seen. The motel has since closed, but the mystery surrounding her disappearance has never faded.
Linda was reported missing by her mother at approximately 6:20 p.m. after she failed to return for dinner. Earlier that day, Linda had reportedly told her brother that she planned to run away and walk across the frozen waters of nearby Lake Champlain to reach Burlington, Vermont. As authorities searched for the missing girl, they discovered a trail of footprints leading from the motel across the ice toward Valcour Island. The tracks ended there, leaving investigators with more questions than answers.
One theory suggested that Linda may have fallen through thin ice and drowned. However, investigators found no broken ice, no signs of a struggle, and no evidence that she had entered the freezing water. Despite extensive searches, Linda was never found, and no trace of her has ever been recovered. More than five decades later, her disappearance remains one of New York’s enduring mysteries, leaving her loved ones without the answers they have desperately sought.
At the time she vanished, Linda was 5 feet 1 inch tall, weighed approximately 100 pounds, and had brown hair and blue eyes. She had a distinctive birthmark running from the center of her chin down to her throat. She was last seen wearing brown corduroy pants, a blue-green hooded parka, and brown suede boots.
