The Nameless
Salem County John Doe (1979)
IDENTIFIED!

🚨🕊️ A Name Returned After Decades: The Story of Robert Dean Irelan
On June 2, 1979, a heartbreaking discovery was made along a quiet dirt road in Quinton Township, New Jersey. Hidden beneath logs and grass in a shallow grave lay the body of a young man, his life taken by a gunshot wound to the face. Investigators determined his death was a homicide, estimating he had been killed sometime during the winter of 1978–1979. For decades, he remained unidentified known only as “John Doe.”
The victim was a white male between 16 and 22 years old, standing approximately 5’6” to 5’9” tall and weighing between 140 and 160 pounds. He had medium brown hair, about 4–6 inches in length, and dental work that included several fillings, small details that, at the time, were not enough to give him back his name.
In 2023, the case saw new life when the New Jersey State Police Cold Case Unit partnered with the Ramapo College Investigative Genetic Genealogy Center. Through advanced genetic genealogy testing, a profile was developed that pointed to a possible identity: Robert Dean Irelan. Investigators later confirmed this through DNA comparison with a family member, finally restoring his identity after more than four decades.
Robert had been a resident of Pleasantville and was known to spend time in nearby Atlantic City. Beyond these details, little is publicly known about his life, and he does not appear to have had a presence in national missing persons databases during the years he was unidentified.
Despite finally learning his name, the search for justice continues. His murder remains unsolved, and authorities are once again asking for the public’s help. Anyone who may have known Robert or has information about his case is urged to contact the New Jersey State Police Cold Case Unit at 1-833-4NJ-COLD.
Rest in peace, Robert. Your name is no longer lost.
