Katrina McVeigh, a 27-year-old woman from Woonsocket, Rhode Island, was last seen on May 3, 1992, getting into a car near Front and Lincoln Streets. She stood approximately 5’1″ tall and weighed around 90 pounds, with brown hair and pierced ears. At the time of her disappearance, she had unfortunately been involved in drugs. She was also a sex worker and had recently left an abusive marriage. She had been staying at a residence in the 200 block of Second Avenue after a period of instability that included living in a shelter and, at times, being homeless. Despite having three children, she did not have custody of them when she vanished. Katrina was not reported missing until June 17, about six weeks later, and she has never been heard from again.
Investigators suspect foul play and believe Katrina is deceased, though no one has ever been charged in connection with her disappearance. Her family believes she may have been murdered by someone close to her and possibly buried along the banks of the Blackstone River. Her brother reportedly searched the area and found clothing he believed belonged to her. In the weeks following her disappearance, her mother received anonymous and threatening phone calls suggesting that Katrina would never be found, adding to the family’s distress. Over the years, several other women in Woonsocket have been murdered or gone missing under troubling circumstances, including Audrey Harris and Christine Dumont, cases later linked to serial killer Jeffrey S. Mailhot, as well as other unsolved homicides. While some of these cases involved similar circumstances, no direct connection to Katrina McVeigh’s disappearance has been proven. Decades later, her case remains unsolved, and the Woonsocket Police continue to list it as an active cold case.
