π―οΈπ The Mysterious Disappearance of Sharaun Taree Cole ππ―οΈ
Sharaun Taree Cole was born on October 8, 1970, and lived with her mother, Loresia Washington, in the Washington Heights section of Manhattan, New York. They resided in an apartment building on Edgecomb Avenue near 165th Street, and Sharaun attended P.S. 128 Elementary School. Friends and family knew her as a young girl with black hair, brown eyes, and pierced ears. At the time of her disappearance, she was 12 years old and stood between 5’6″ and 5’7″ tall, weighing approximately 110 to 115 pounds.
On the evening of February 25, 1983, Sharaun told her mother she was going to a nearby park to play. She was last seen outside her family’s residence on Edgecomb Avenue at approximately 5:30 p.m. She was wearing a beige wool jacket over a gold sweater, along with blue jeans and blue-and-white sneakers. When she did not return home that evening, her mother assumed she had gone to spend the night with her godmother, something she had done on previous occasions. It was not until the following morning, after contacting the godmother and learning that Sharaun had never arrived, that her mother realized something was wrong and reported her missing to authorities.
As investigators began looking into the case, questions arose about whether Sharaun may have left home voluntarily. Her mother firmly stated that Sharaun was not experiencing any problems at home and insisted that she would never run away. However, some people who knew Sharaun painted a different picture, claiming that she and her mother often struggled to get along and that she had difficulties within her home life. These conflicting accounts led investigators to consider the possibility that she may have left on her own, although no evidence ever confirmed that theory.
Several months later, in July 1983, a potentially important development emerged. Two individuals who knew Sharaun reported seeing her in separate areas of Manhattan. One sighting occurred in Greenwich Village, while another was reported near 160th Street and Broadway. In both instances, witnesses described her as appearing dirty, upset, and disoriented. She was reportedly still wearing the same clothing she had been wearing on the day she disappeared, although the clothes were now filthy and worn. Those who knew Sharaun found this especially troubling because she was known to take pride in her appearance and personal hygiene. The sightings raised fears that she might have been living on the streets at only 12 years old. Despite efforts by law enforcement to investigate these reports, they were unable to locate her or determine where she had been staying.
No additional confirmed sightings or significant leads have surfaced since the summer of 1983. More than four decades later, the fate of Sharaun Taree Cole remains unknown. Her disappearance continues to be classified as an endangered missing persons case, and investigators have never been able to determine what happened after she left for the park that February evening.
Anyone with information about the disappearance of Sharaun Taree Cole is encouraged to contact the New York City Police Department at 212-694-7781.
After more than 40 years, her family and investigators continue to hope that someone may come forward with information that could finally provide answers and help solve this mystery.
