đź’” Stolen Before She Ever Came Home: The Disappearance of Marlene Santana đź’”

On October 21, 1985, just three days after she was born, baby Marlene Santana was stolen from her mother’s arms in one of New York City’s most heartbreaking unsolved child abduction cases. Marlene had entered the world only days earlier at Brookdale Hospital in Brooklyn, where she was kept slightly longer than expected due to jaundice. While admiring her newborn daughter through the nursery window, Marlene’s mother, Francisca Santana, was approached by a woman who complimented the baby, calling her the prettiest and quietest child in the nursery. What seemed like an innocent encounter would soon turn into every parent’s worst nightmare.

Later that evening, after being discharged from the hospital, Francisca left with Marlene wrapped in a pastel-colored swaddling blanket and accompanied by family members. As they walked home, they were confronted by the same woman from the nursery. She revealed a handgun and threatened to kill the infant if they did not obey her commands. Terrified, the family was forced to walk for several blocks at gunpoint through the streets of Brooklyn. Near a deserted junkyard, the woman pointed the gun at Marlene once again and demanded the baby. Fearing for her daughter’s life, Francisca had no choice but to hand over her newborn child.

The abductor fled in a waiting white 1976 Chevrolet Malibu with red lettering on the door, driven by an accomplice. Despite frantic efforts to stop the vehicle and countless hours of investigation by law enforcement, Marlene was never found. Her abductor was described as a woman in her mid-to-late twenties with dyed reddish-blonde hair, possibly wearing a wig. Investigators later theorized she may have been an emotionally troubled woman desperate for a child of her own, though others have long feared Marlene may have been sold through an illegal adoption network.

Because Marlene was abducted at only three days old, there are no known photographs of her. She was born with a condition called metatarsus adductus, which caused her feet to appear somewhat “C-shaped” when viewed from the bottom, though the condition may have corrected itself as she grew older. Age-progressed images have been created over the years in hopes that someone might recognize her.

More than forty years have passed, but the Santana family has never stopped searching. Every October 18, Marlene’s parents celebrate the birthday of the daughter they never got to watch grow up. They continue to hold onto hope that one day she will learn the truth about her past and find her way back to the family that has loved and missed her since the day she disappeared.

Marlene was only three days old when she was taken. Someone knows what happened to her. After all these years, her family still deserves answers.
