Fifteen Years Missing: The Disappearance of Patrick Alford Jr. 🔍🙏

On a cold winter night in Brooklyn on January 22, 2010, 7-year-old Patrick Alford Jr. stepped out of his foster mother’s 11th-floor apartment at the Spring Creek Towers complex to take out the trash. It should have been a quick, ordinary trip down the hallway and back again. Instead, it became the last known moment anyone ever saw him. Patrick never returned, and within minutes, he seemingly vanished without a trace.

Patrick’s disappearance immediately triggered one of the largest missing child investigations New York City has seen in decades, often compared in impact to the disappearance of Etan Patz. Detectives launched an enormous search effort, conducting roughly 14,000 interviews, knocking on thousands of doors, and searching around 9,000 apartments. K-9 units tracked his scent to a nearby bus stop before it abruptly disappeared. Investigators followed thousands of tips from across the country and even internationally, but every lead eventually came to a dead end.

At the time, Patrick had only recently entered foster care with his younger sister, placed there after the holiday season in 2009. According to his biological mother, Jennifer Rodriguez, she had reached out for help during a difficult period in her life, hoping social services could provide support while she worked to improve herself as a parent. Instead, her children were placed into foster care. She has said that decision is something she has carried immense guilt over ever since.

Jennifer and Patrick shared an especially close bond. She remembers him as a bright, affectionate little boy who loved Spider-Man, video games, and simple moments of joy. He would even save his allowance to buy her small gifts like chocolates for Valentine’s Day. In interviews, she has recalled heartbreaking phone calls where Patrick would tell her he wanted to come home, his young voice still echoing in her memory.

Patrick’s transition into foster care was reportedly difficult. He and his sister had not been there long before his disappearance, and communication barriers existed between him and his foster mother, who primarily spoke Spanish while Patrick spoke English. On the night he vanished, his foster mother told investigators she briefly became distracted by a phone call while Patrick went to dispose of the trash. In that brief moment, he was gone.

What followed was an unprecedented search effort. Law enforcement canvassed entire housing complexes, reviewed surveillance footage, checked transit systems, interviewed sex offenders, examined financial records, and even expanded searches beyond New York State. Emergency teams searched nearby facilities, and investigators pursued every conceivable angle. Despite the scale of the investigation, no definitive trace of Patrick was ever found.

The case deeply impacted the city and remains open to this day. Former NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly described its significance alongside other historic missing child cases, noting how profoundly it affected public awareness and law enforcement procedures. Today, Patrick’s case continues to be actively investigated, with detectives still reviewing files, following tips, and returning to the Spring Creek Towers community where he was last seen. Flyers are still being handed out, and the search for answers has never fully stopped.

The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children has released a new age-progression image showing what Patrick may look like today at 22 years old. A $13,000 reward remains available for information that could help bring clarity to the case.

For Patrick’s mother, the years have not dulled the pain or uncertainty. She still celebrates his birthday every year and holds onto the hope that he is alive somewhere. She has spoken openly about her regret and the emotional weight she carries, but also about her determination not to give up searching for her son.

Patrick Alford Jr. was a child who loved Spider-Man, video games, and his family. He walked out of an apartment building on a freezing January night and disappeared from a city full of people, but not a single confirmed answer. Fifteen years later, his family is still waiting for the truth, still waiting for Patrick, and still hoping that someone, somewhere, will finally come forward.
