Irondequoit, New York Jane Doe (1988)

On July 31, 1988, a 12-year-old boy was playing and digging in his backyard in a quiet residential neighborhood overlooking Irondequoit Bay in Irondequoit, New York, when he made a discovery no child should ever have to make. Beneath the earth, in a shallow grave just 2–3 feet below the surface, were the skeletal remains of a young woman.
She had been buried in a hunched-over position, with no clothing or personal belongings found alongside her. Investigators determined that she was a White/Caucasian female, believed to have been approximately 15–19 years old when she died. She stood around 5’1″, with estimates placing her height somewhere between 4’10” and 5’5″. Her remains had likely been in the ground for 10–15 years, although investigators could not rule out the possibility that she had been there for as long as 30 years. That means she may have died sometime between the late 1950s and late 1970s.
Perhaps most haunting of all, no clear cause of death could be determined. There were no obvious signs of previous trauma or injury, yet because of the circumstances surrounding her burial, her death was ultimately treated as a homicide. Someone had taken this young woman from the world, placed her beneath the ground, and somehow, all these years later, her name and story remain unknown.
There is one detail that could someday help bring her identity back: her teeth. A forensic anthropologist discovered that she had distinctive dental work, including several gold foil fillings. A facial reconstruction was also created to give the public an idea of what she may have looked like during her life.
Think about that for a moment. She was someone’s daughter. Someone’s sister. Someone’s friend. She had a voice, a personality, hopes, fears, favorite things, and a life that mattered. Somewhere, there may have been someone who waited for her to come home. Someone who wondered what happened to her. Someone who never got an answer.
Today, she is known as Jane Irondequoit Doe. Her case is identified as NamUs #2607 and NCMEC Reference #1106805. Her DNA has been developed into a profile and entered into national databases, and investigators continue to pursue modern forensic testing in the hope that technology can finally accomplish what time could not.
For nearly four decades, this young woman has been waiting to be remembered by the name she was given at birth.
She deserves more than “Jane Doe.” She deserves her name.
