Who Was the Woman Found in Black Creek? đź’”
More than five decades ago, a young woman was found deceased in Black Creek Township, Pennsylvania. She had no known name, no confirmed identity, and no one who could tell investigators who she was.
Today, she remains unidentified.
On August 13, 1973, her remains were discovered in the Village of Tank in Black Creek Township, near Interstate 80 in Luzerne County. Investigators determined that she had likely died only a day or two before she was found. Her death is suspected to have been a homicide.
She was a Black woman believed to be somewhere between her late teens and 40 years old, with investigators estimating her age more specifically at approximately 20–30. She stood around 4’10” to 5’2″ and weighed approximately 100 pounds.
She had dark brown or black hair, which had been pulled back into a short ponytail, and brown eyes. She also had a partial upper dental plate containing six teeth, a detail that could potentially help identify her.
đź‘š The clothing she was wearing may be just as important.
She was found wearing blue or green shorts, a pink blouse with white lace, and blue slippers with a blue-and-green floral pattern. A yellow-and-green blanket was also found near her.
Somewhere, there may have been a family wondering why their daughter, sister, mother, aunt, or friend never came home. Someone may have spent years wondering what happened to a woman they loved, without ever knowing that her remains were found in Pennsylvania.
For more than 50 years, she has been known only as Jane Doe.
Her remains were eventually buried at Maple Hill Cemetery, where unidentified people from Luzerne County were buried. Her identity remains unknown. 🕯️
Investigators have worked to identify her, but there is currently insufficient DNA to develop a usable profile. Dental records are available, however, and could potentially provide an important clue.
There is still a chance that someone knows who she was.
Maybe a family member remembers a woman who disappeared in 1973.
Maybe someone recognizes the clothing she was wearing.
Maybe a forgotten family story, an old photograph, or a missing-person report could finally give this woman back the name she lost.
đź’” She was more than an unidentified body. She was someone’s loved one. She had a life, a name, memories, and people who may have cared about her.
After all these years, she deserves to be known.
