π¨π» WHERE IS B.J.? The Mysterious Disappearance of Barbara Jean Monaco π»π
On August 23, 1978, 18-year-old Barbara Jean Monaco disappeared during what was supposed to be a fun vacation in Virginia Beach, Virginia. She had traveled from Derby, Connecticut, with her older sister and two of her sister’s friends. Just days earlier, Barbara had celebrated her 18th birthday. She was beginning a new chapter of her life, with plans and opportunities ahead of her. But that vacation would end in a mystery that has haunted her family for decades.
Barbara and her sister arrived in Virginia Beach on August 20 and checked into the Aloha Motel on 15th Street. They planned to spend a week enjoying their time away.
On the night of August 22, the sisters visited the Country Comfort bar on Pacific Avenue. While there, an unidentified man repeatedly tried to persuade Barbara to go out with him, claiming he owned a yacht. Barbara was not interested and reportedly felt uncomfortable with his attention.
Her sister described the man as approximately 30 years old, over six feet tall, heavily built, with blond hair and tanned skin. He was reportedly wearing blue jeans and a plaid shirt.
Around 1:00 a.m. on August 23, Barbara left her sister and began walking toward Peabody’s, a bar approximately six blocks away. She had made plans to meet a bartender there for a date.
But Barbara never arrived.
Witnesses reportedly saw her get into a vehicle along Pacific Avenue. The car was said to contain four or five men. After that sighting, Barbara vanished without a trace.
She was never heard from again.
π A FAMILY’S SEARCH FOR ANSWERS
Barbara’s sister attempted to report her missing later that same day, but police reportedly refused to take a missing-person report for 48 hours. The bartender Barbara had planned to meet was later cleared as a suspect.
Eight months passed without answers. Desperate to find their daughter, Barbara’s family offered a $10,000 reward for her recovery, dead or alive.
The reward brought forward a man who claimed he had witnessed Barbara’s abduction and murder on the night she disappeared. According to his account, she had been forced into a sedan, taken to a lakeside cottage near Oceana, Virginia, and killed. He claimed her body had then been disposed of in a nearby lake.
Authorities searched the lake and reportedly recovered a cinder block with a rope attached to it. However, Barbara’s remains were never found.
The informant reportedly passed a polygraph examination but eventually stopped cooperating after authorities declined to offer him immunity from prosecution in exchange for his testimony.
Years passed, but investigators continued pursuing leads.
π A DISTURBING DEVELOPMENT IN 2001
In 2001, a man named James L. “Jimbo” Moore Jr. spoke with police and reportedly provided information about Barbara’s disappearance that investigators believed he could only have known if he had been with her that night.
He agreed to take a polygraph examination to verify his account. However, just hours after making his statement, and before the examination could take place, Moore died outside his apartment.
No arrests have ever been made in connection with Barbara’s disappearance.
π Barbara was more than a missing-person case. She was an 18-year-old young woman with a future ahead of her.
She graduated from Derby High School, where she was a drum majorette, and studied business. While vacationing in Virginia, she had even learned that she had been hired for her very first job.
She was excitedly stepping into adulthood, with new experiences and opportunities waiting for her.
Instead, her family was left with an empty space that could never be filled.
In 2003, on the 25th anniversary of her disappearance, her family held a memorial service for her. Even after all those years, the questions surrounding what happened to Barbara remained unanswered.
Today, Barbara would be 66 years old.
She may go by the initials B.J. and has several distinctive identifying characteristics:
- Brown hair and brown eyes.
- Approximately 5’4″ tall and 110 pounds at the time of disappearance.
- Blind in one eye.
- A previous hairline fracture to her left arm.
When she disappeared, Barbara was wearing a long-sleeved yellow gauze shirt, blue jeans, a brown belt, and wooden clogs.
An age-progressed photograph showing what Barbara may look like at 60 has been released in hopes that someone will recognize her.
ποΈ MORE THAN FOUR DECADES LATER, BARBARA STILL DESERVES ANSWERS.
Someone may remember seeing her that night on Pacific Avenue. Someone may recognize the men or vehicle involved. Someone may know what happened after she got into that car.
Her family has waited decades for answers, and the circumstances surrounding her disappearance remain deeply troubling.
Please don’t let Barbara’s story fade into the past. One person coming forward could make a difference in a case that has remained unsolved for generations.
