On the morning of March 18, 1999, 14-year-old Leanne Marie Hausberg disappeared from the Bensonhurst neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. She was last seen around 9:00 a.m. standing on a street corner on 67th Street, and she has never been seen or heard from again. Today, Leanne would be 41 years old, but for the past 27 years, her family has been living with the unimaginable pain of not knowing what happened to the little girl they love.

Leanne is biracial, Native American and White, with brown hair, brown eyes, pierced ears, and a small scar on her right cheek. She was approximately 5’4″ tall and weighed between 120 and 150 pounds. When she disappeared, she was wearing a red and black bubble jacket, a blue T-shirt, blue jeans, blue Timberland work boots, and black earrings with white stones. She was also carrying a black wallet or purse.

Although many agencies labeled Leanne as a runaway, her family has never believed she left by choice. They have always feared she met with foul play. Before she vanished, Leanne had written in her diary that she was seeing an older man, a detail that has remained deeply concerning throughout the investigation.

Leanne’s family says they did everything they were supposed to do. Her stepfather immediately reported her missing, but they felt their concerns were dismissed. According to the family, they were told she would probably return in a day or two, and her disappearance was treated as a runaway case instead of a missing child in danger. That label followed her for years, delaying the urgency her family believes she deserved.

Her loved ones also believe her Native American heritage played a role in how her case was handled. For years, her race was incorrectly listed in missing persons databases, reflecting a much larger issue affecting Indigenous families across the United States. Advocates continue to speak out about the Missing and Murdered Indigenous People crisis, pointing out that Indigenous women and children, especially those living in cities, often receive far less attention than other missing persons cases.

Leanne’s story is more than a cold case. It is a family’s lifelong search for answers, a mother’s heartbreak, and a reminder that every missing child deserves to be searched for with urgency and compassion. Somewhere, someone remembers that morning. Someone knows who Leanne was with, where she was headed, or what happened after she disappeared. Even the smallest piece of information could finally help bring answers after nearly three decades.
