What happened to Joseph J. Bichrest?
On October 16, 1976, 34-year-old Joseph Bichrest disappeared from Shirley, Maine — along with his blue-and-white Jeep.
Nearly five decades later, neither Joseph nor his vehicle has ever been found.
👤 WHO WAS JOSEPH?
Joseph was a 34-year-old attorney who had previously lived in Pennsylvania before moving to Maine.
At the time of his disappearance, he was approximately 5’11” and 200 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. He had a full beard and mustache.
🚙 THE JEEP
Joseph was last known to be driving a blue-and-white Jeep bearing Maine license plate 550-212.
The vehicle disappeared with him and has never been recovered.
💳 A CREDIT CARD USED 2 DAYS LATER
One of the most puzzling details in the case came after Joseph vanished.
Two days later, a credit card in his name was reportedly used in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania — the city where Joseph had previously lived.
Who used the card?
Was Joseph still alive?
Or did someone else have possession of it?
Those questions have never been fully answered.
🧩 A LIFE UNDER PRESSURE
According to case records, Joseph was experiencing significant personal and financial difficulties around the time he disappeared.
He was in the process of a divorce and was facing investigations involving financial matters, including allegations of theft, bad checks, and tax issues. Records also indicate that he had become despondent and had made threats to take his own life.
However, investigators have never established what ultimately happened to him.
🔦 THE QUARRY THEORY
Over the years, anonymous reports and rumors have suggested that Joseph may have been murdered and that his body and Jeep were disposed of in a quarry near Greenville.
Several quarries have reportedly been searched over the years.
Nothing connected to Joseph has been recovered.
