In 1983, 54-year-old Jesse Hoover traveled all the way from Texas to Maine with a goal: to hike the Appalachian Trail. 🥾🌲
But her journey would end in mystery.
Jesse was last seen on May 20, 1983, at the Baxter State Park Headquarters in Millinocket, Maine. She planned to climb Mount Katahdin, but park rangers would not allow her to make the climb because they believed she was not adequately prepared.
She was unfamiliar with the area, had limited hiking experience, and did not have specialized hiking equipment. She reportedly had only 15–20 in cash and planned to send money home and pick up her prescription medication as she passed through towns along the trail.
Then, somehow, Jesse disappeared. 💔
🌲 THE 100-MILE WILDERNESS
Jesse was last seen near the trailhead of the 100-Mile Wilderness, one of the most remote sections of the Appalachian Trail.
Hikers traveling through this area are generally advised to carry 8–10 days of food and supplies. Jesse reportedly had only some beef jerky with her.
The weather that night was dangerous. 🌧️ Temperatures reached around 72°F during the day but dropped to approximately 30°F overnight, with rain in the area.
Jesse also had epilepsy and required medication, adding another serious concern to an already difficult situation.
An extensive search was conducted, but no trace of Jesse was found. Other hikers in the area did not recall seeing her.
Her sister eventually reported her missing on July 11, 1983, nearly two months after Jesse was last seen.

- Height: Approximately 5’8″–5’10”
- Weight: Approximately 240–250 lbs
- Race: White
- Hair: Graying brown
- Eyes: Blue
- Distinguishing feature: Two bottom teeth missing
- Medical condition: Epilepsy; required medication

- Blue shirt
- Blue windbreaker
- Carrying a blue knapsack

Did Jesse enter the wilderness?

More than 40 years later, Jesse’s disappearance remains unresolved.
