More than three decades ago, Michael Joseph Madore disappeared from Milo, Maine.
On April 6, 1996, Michael was seen leaving the Derby area of Milo on his 10-speed bicycle. He was reportedly heading in the direction of the Bangor/Bridgton area.
He was never heard from again.
🚲 The Last Known Sighting
Michael was reportedly wearing a black-and-gray V-neck sweater with two colored stripes, possibly another gray sweater, thermal long underwear, and blue dress pants.
He was also known to wear eyeglasses.
At the time of his disappearance, Michael was described as:

- 📏 Approximately 5’8″–5’10”
- ⚖️ Approximately 165–175 pounds
- 💇 Brown hair
- 👁️ Brown eyes
- 👓 Wore eyeglasses
- 🩹 Scar on his thigh
- 🩹 Scar above his eye
🔎 Concern Grows
Michael’s friends became concerned when he failed to return.
On April 8, a friend contacted the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife to report that Michael had last been seen two days earlier.
The friend told authorities that Michael had left behind handwritten notes and may have indicated that he was leaving for Alaska. There were also concerns about Michael’s personal circumstances at the time.
Authorities were asked to check an abandoned cabin located several miles into the woods in Lake View Plantation, a place Michael was familiar with. Investigators reportedly found bicycle tracks leading toward the camp.
Other reports indicate that Michael’s friends and people close to him had also contacted local police because they were concerned about his welfare.
📝 The Notes
When people close to Michael went to his home on Railroad Avenue, they reportedly found handwritten letters that appeared to have been written by him, along with a small amount of cash and a hatchet.
The circumstances surrounding those notes, and what Michael intended when he left, remain part of the unanswered questions surrounding his disappearance.
Some early reports raised the possibility that Michael may have intended to harm himself. That remains an investigative theory and should not be treated as a confirmed explanation for what happened to him.
What is known is that Michael left home on April 6, 1996, and he has never been located.
🕯️ Still Missing
Investigators have not found evidence establishing that Michael moved elsewhere or began a new life under another identity.
Very little information about his disappearance is publicly available, but his case remains open.
After all these years, someone may still remember seeing Michael, his bicycle, or something unusual in the Milo area around April 6, 1996.
