Before leaving, Stanley took a photograph of his child and said he would call home to check in. He never did.

Stanley never returned home, and after approximately a year, his mother reported him missing to the Madison Police Department.

The Maine State Police became involved in the investigation in 1997. His case was later entered into NamUs in 2016.
