🔎 MYSTERY IN THE MAINE WOODS: Two Missing SouthCoast Men Found in Shallow Grave 🌲
In August 1997, a bear hunter made a chilling discovery in the remote woods of Masardis, Maine: human skeletal remains buried in a shallow grave. Three months later, DNA evidence confirmed the identities of two Massachusetts men who had been missing since 1994, Louis D. Alexander, 60, of Somerset, and Joseph Savitch, 59, of Swansea.
Authorities determined that both men had been shot to death, officially classifying their deaths as homicides. But with the discovery of their remains came a disturbing mystery: Who killed them, and why?
Both men were well known to law enforcement and had lengthy criminal histories. In 1994, they were indicted in connection with a series of burglaries across Aroostook County, Maine. Investigators said the operation involved targeting homes believed to contain safes, stealing the safes, and transporting them to remote locations to break them open.
Savitch owned a house in Masardis, placing him in the very area where the remains were eventually discovered. The pair’s criminal past made headlines for decades, but their final fate remained shrouded in unanswered questions.
Despite confirming the victims’ identities and cause of death, authorities did not publicly identify any suspects in the 1997 report. Because only skeletal remains were recovered, the medical examiner could not establish exactly when the men died.
🧩 Two men vanished. Two bodies were found. And a double homicide investigation began.
More than three decades later, the circumstances surrounding their deaths remain a haunting chapter in the SouthCoast’s criminal history.
