On the evening of February 9, 2004, 21-year-old Maura Murray vanished after a car accident along Route 112 in Haverhill, New Hampshire. When police arrived at the scene, Maura was nowhere to be found. Her car had been left behind, but the young woman who had been driving it had disappeared.
More than two decades later, Maura’s whereabouts remain unknown, and her family continues to search for answers.
Maura was a nursing student at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and a standout student-athlete from Hanson, Massachusetts. She was building her future when, for reasons that remain unclear, she left campus and drove north. Earlier that day, she had told her professors and work supervisor she would be away for a week because of a death in the family, though her family later confirmed that no such death had occurred.
At approximately 7:27 p.m., a local resident reported a vehicle off the road on Route 112. A passing motorist stopped and spoke briefly with a young woman near the car. She appeared cold and was shivering. When offered assistance, she reportedly declined and said she had already contacted AAA. But when police arrived at approximately 7:46 p.m., the driver was gone.
Inside the damaged vehicle, investigators found personal belongings, including gloves, makeup, jewelry, directions to Burlington, Vermont, and Maura’s favorite stuffed animal. Her cell phone, debit card, and credit cards were missing and have never been located. A reported sighting later that evening described a young person walking east along Route 112, wearing jeans, a dark coat, and a light-colored hood, but the sighting has never definitively established what happened to Maura.
Searches, public appeals, and years of investigative work have failed to uncover a definitive answer. In 2009, Maura’s case was transferred to New Hampshire’s Cold Case Unit and is treated as a suspicious missing-person investigation. In January 2022, the FBI issued a national alert and created a Violent Criminal Apprehension Profile to help law enforcement agencies share information. In February 2024, authorities released an age-progression image showing what Maura might look like today.
Her disappearance has received international attention and has been featured on programs including ABC’s 20/20, Disappeared, and the Oxygen documentary series The Disappearance of Maura Murray. Despite the attention surrounding her case, the most important question remains unanswered: where is Maura?
Maura would be 44 years old today. Behind the headlines, documentaries, and endless speculation is a daughter and sister whose family has spent years hoping for answers. Her loved ones have never stopped wanting to know what happened to her.
In 2026, New Hampshire’s Cold Case Unit reaffirmed its commitment to the investigation, stating that it continues working with state and federal law enforcement partners to pursue credible leads.
