π·π―οΈ Mother’s Day Murder: Who Killed Stacey Burns? ππ
On May 10, 2009, Mother’s Day took a devastating turn for a family in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire. Forty-one-year-old Stacey Burns, a beloved school nurse and mother of five, was found brutally murdered inside her own home. More than 17 years later, her killing remains unsolved, and her family is still waiting for answers.
Stacey was well known throughout the close-knit lakeside community of Wolfeboro. Friends remembered her home as a place where everyone was welcome, describing her as someone whose door was always open to people of all ages. She worked as a school nurse at Carpenter Elementary School and devoted much of her life to raising her five children.
Her personal life, however, had not always been easy. Stacey had been married to Ed Burns for more than 20 years, and the couple had five children together. Their marriage reportedly experienced significant difficulties, particularly during periods when Ed returned home from his work as a merchant marine. Eventually, Stacey filed for divorce while he was away at sea. Their divorce was finalized around Christmas 2008.
Following the divorce, Stacey began a new relationship with Jim Vittum, a divorced father of two who worked as a logger. He reportedly fell in love with Stacey shortly after they began dating.
But just months after her marriage ended, Stacey’s life was taken.
On May 10, 2009, Stacey was discovered stabbed to death inside her home on North Main Street in Wolfeboro. She had suffered multiple stab wounds. Tragically, two of her children and several of their friends had been sleeping in nearby rooms when the murder occurred. They reportedly heard nothing.
It was Stacey’s 15-year-old son, Michael, who made the heartbreaking discovery of his mother’s body in her bedroom.
Years later, Michael spoke publicly about the trauma of that morning, recalling how difficult it was to process what he had found. The image remained with him long after that terrible day.
π Behind this investigation is a family that lost a mother, a sister, and someone deeply loved by her community. Five children were left to grow up without their mother, and a family has had to carry the weight of her loss for years.
Investigators have conducted an extensive investigation into Stacey’s murder, dedicating thousands of hours to trying to solve the case. In 2019, then-Associate Attorney General Jeff Strelzin confirmed that the New Hampshire Department of Justice and State Police remained committed to finding justice for Stacey and her family.
Despite the extensive work, no one has ever been charged in connection with her murder.
It is important to note that although Stacey and Ed were going through a divorce at the time, Ed Burns was never named a suspect or person of interest in the investigation. He publicly rejected suggestions that he would have harmed Stacey.
π―οΈ More than 17 years later, Stacey’s murder remains unsolved.
Someone may know what happened inside that home on Mother’s Day in 2009. Someone may have information they have never shared, or remember a detail that could help investigators finally put the pieces together.
Stacey was more than a victim in an unsolved homicide. She was a mother of five, a school nurse, a friend, and a woman who made people feel welcome. Her life mattered, and her story deserves to be remembered.
