πŸ•―οΈπŸ”Ž Missing Person: Audrey Lyn Nerenberg πŸ•―οΈπŸ”Ž

Audrey Lyn Nerenberg was 18 years old when she disappeared from her family’s home on Ryder Street in the Canarsie section of Brooklyn, New York, in July 1977. Reports differ on whether she was last seen on July 5 or July 15, but in either case, Audrey left home intending to return shortly and was never seen again. She was described as a White female with long, light brown curly hair, brown eyes, an olive complexion, freckles across her nose, cheeks, shoulders, and hands, and a small gap between her upper front teeth. Standing between 5’4″ and 5’5″ tall and weighing approximately 115 pounds, Audrey was last believed to be wearing a blue tube top, cut-off denim shorts or blue jeans, clear plastic open-toed sandals, and possibly a sweater tied around her waist. She carried a small brown shoulder bag containing only a few dollars in cash.

At the time of her disappearance, Audrey was living with hebephrenic (disorganized) schizophrenia, a condition she had been diagnosed with at age 15. Although she sometimes experienced paranoia and auditory hallucinations, her family stated that she was responding well to treatment, was under a doctor’s care, and was taking the antipsychotic medication Thorazine. Audrey functioned at the level of a young teenager and had been hospitalized at several psychiatric facilities in New York City between 1974 and 1977. She was an outpatient at Kingsboro Psychiatric Center when she vanished and was not carrying any identification or medication with her.

The circumstances surrounding Audrey’s disappearance remain mysterious. Shortly after she went missing, her father received an anonymous phone call from someone claiming to have abducted her and demanding money, but the caller never contacted the family again. Over the years, investigators have explored numerous theories, including the possibility that Audrey became disoriented and was admitted to a psychiatric institution as an unidentified patient. Other persons of interest have been examined, including convicted kidnapper and suspected serial predator Andre Rand, although no evidence has ever connected him to Audrey’s case. Additional individuals were investigated, but none were linked to her disappearance.

Another troubling aspect of the case involves Audrey’s allegation that she had been sexually assaulted by the owner of a Flatbush-area ice cream parlor prior to her disappearance. The allegation was denied, no charges were filed, and investigators were unable to establish any connection between the claim and Audrey’s disappearance. Despite extensive searches, interviews, and decades of investigation, no confirmed trace of Audrey has ever been found. There has been no known activity on her Social Security number since 1977.

Audrey enjoyed shopping, music, and dancing, and her family never gave up hope of finding her. Today, nearly five decades later, her disappearance remains unsolved. Some investigators believe she may still be alive under another identity or living unidentified within a care facility, while others fear she may have met with foul play.
